12-year-old girl hit, killed by car on North Side

Accident occurred around 7 a.m. on West Avenue and Mt. Tipton

SAN ANTONIO – A 12-year-old girl walking with her friends to school was struck and killed by a car, San Antonio police said Thursday.

North East Independent School District officials late Thursday morning identified the student as Mailani Godin, a sixth-grader at Eisenhower Middle School.

The accident occurred just after 7 a.m. on West Avenue and Mt. Tipton not far from the school on the city's North Side.

Officer Douglas Greene, a San Antonio Police Department spokesman, said Mailani was on her way to school and was crossing West Avenue with two friends when she was hit by a Prius heading north. The girls were in the crosswalk, officer Greene said, but did not have the light.

Greene said one of the friends attempted to grab Mailani and pull her out of the car's way, but was unsuccessful. CPR was attempted by emergency crews, but she died at the scene.

The driver did stop and and is talking to police, Greene said.
