Minivan rear-ends 18-wheeler, driver hospitalized

Accident occurred just before 3 a.m. in 5500 block of Rittiman Rd

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said a driver who was speeding on a Northeast Side street crashed into an 18-wheeler overnight.

The accident happened just before 3 a.m. in the 5500 block of Rittiman Road.

According to police, the driver of a Chrysler Voyager minivan was going excessively fast eastbound before rear-ending the big rig. The van became lodged under the back of the 18-wheeler, police said.  

The van driver was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck stayed at the scene, was not intoxicated and called 9-1-1.

No criminal charges are pending.
