Interstate 35 will be closed in two separate places this weekend, the Texas Department of Transportation announced.

Main lanes closed between George Beach and Rittiman: Friday morning through Monday morning

The main lanes of I-35 between George Beach Avenue and Rittiman Road will be closed starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 7, and will remain closed until 5 a.m. on Monday, April 10.

There will, however, be a five-hour stretch of time from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday where the interstate will be reopened to allow Spurs fans to get to and from the game.

I-35 North at Old Wiederstein Road closure: Sunday night through Wednesday morning

The second closure of I-35 will begin at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, and last until 5 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12. This closure will affect all northbound lanes at Old Wiederstein Road. The entrance ramp of Old Wiederstein Road will also be affected.

Tips and routes to avoid this traffic nightmare

To help you get around this weekend, we have come up with some routes that will allow drivers to avoid the inevitable traffic headache.

For those driving in on westbound I-10, exit Foster Road and drive north. The road eventually turns into Rittiman Road, which intersects directly with I-35 where the closure ends.

Folks driving north from downtown on I-35 might end up taking a more scenic route. It might be best to exit at Broadway and take it all the way to Austin Highway. Drivers can stay on Austin Highway to its intersection with Loop 410, or they can swing a right on Rittman Road.

A third option for those driving across San Antonio, you're in luck. There are plenty of other interstates that should be free of any major construction snags. I-10 to Loop 1604 will route drivers south of the construction nightmare. Meanwhile, Highway 281 to 1604, Wurzbach Parkway or 410 will keep drivers well north of the road closure.
