Police: Woman dies after crashing car into pole, building overnight

Medical Examiner has not released woman's name

SAN ANTONIO – A woman is dead after she crashed her vehicle into a telephone pole and then into a building late Saturday night, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred just before 11:30 p.m. near a shopping center in the 1200 block of Bandera Road.

According to police, the woman, in her mid 50s, was seen slouched in her vehicle when someone attempted to wake her up. That's when police said the woman accelerated her vehicle to a high rate of speed, crossing Bandera Road just before crashing into the telephone pole, snapping it in half.

The vehicle eventually hit a building before finally coming to a complete stop, police said.

Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to rescue the trapped woman. She suffered leg injuries and was taken to University Hospital where she later died.

Police said they believe alcohol did not play a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The Medical Examiner's Office has not released the woman's name.
