Drivers concerned dangerous intersection may cause more harm

TxDOT has project in works set to begin in 2024

SAN ANTONIO – Dangers at an east Bexar County crossing have some drivers feeling uneasy after the intersection of Loop 1604 and FM 1346 was the scene of a deadly accident Tuesday night.

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office investigators said a driver tried to pass another vehicle but lost control and ended up hitting a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The driver died at the scene and his identity has not been released.

Drivers in the area said the intersection is the scene of accidents and near-misses. Juan Solis said he was nearly struck by a driver who lost control of his vehicle just a few months back.

“A man just crossed right in front of me and went into a ditch,” he said.

The speed limit is 65 mph on Loop 1604 and 55 mph on FM 1346. Solis thinks many people are caught off guard by the stoplight. He thinks it’s dangerous.

“I think it is, but I don’t know what you can do to fix it,” he said.

Bexar County said there have been nine accidents at that intersection to date since December 2016. Three of them, including this week’s fatal crash, were in October. The majority of them were recorded as non-injury.

The Texas Department of Transportation’s website shows there were seven crashes at the intersection the year before.

TxDOT has a project in the works for that intersection set to begin in 2024. With more people moving to that rural area, drivers urge people to be more cautious.

“Pay attention, stay awake and stay off the phone,” Solis said.
