21 tons of chicken fell on Highway 90, causing a traffic nightmare

18-wheeler overturned near Ray Ellison Drive

SAN ANTONIO – An 18-wheeler rolled onto its side spilling 42,000 pounds of frozen chicken near eastbound Highway 90 and Ray Ellision Drive, San Antonio police said Monday.

Police said the 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on the access road in a construction zone when the vehicle hit a small barrier on the highway causing the driver to lose control.

The 18-wheeler slid on its side for roughly 30 feet before hitting a telephone pole and ripping off the cab, police said.

Three people were inside the cab of the 18-wheeler at the time of the accident -- two adults and a two-year-old baby, police said. No one was hurt.

Police said the 18-wheeler was carrying 42,000 pounds of frozen chicken strips that had to be collected.

Traffic in the area slowed while emergency crews worked the scene.
