Driver crashes pickup truck into South Side home

No one injured in crash in 1200 block of Chalmers Avenue

SAN ANTONIO – A local family will have to find another place to stay after a pickup crashed into their South Side home early Thursday morning.

The crash was reported around 8 a.m. in the 1200 block of Chalmers Avenue, not far from Interstate 35 and Division Avenue.

According to police, a young man is in custody for failure to stop and render information.

"This young man was going down Chalmers and ran the stop sign," said Russell Johnson, a battallion chief with the San Antonio Fire Department. "He jumped the big curb. He hit the house at an angle, and when he hit the porch on the house, it flipped around sideways."

Police said there was major damage to the home and the family is being asked not to go inside.

Henrieta Longoria had just left her home to volunteer when she received a call from her neighbor.

"I worked so hard for this house for him to just come and destroy it," Longoria said. "I'm going to need help to build it back up."

No one was inside the home at the time of the crash.

Neighbors hope the severity of the incident will call attention to the need for additional speed control.

"There needs to be speed bumps or something," said Adrian Polanco, a neighbor. "It was been real bad these past couple of years. There have been some wrecks. There are people just running the stop sign."

According to the San Antonio Fire Department website, as many as six units answered the call.

Police said their investigation is ongoing.
