32,000 people in shelters across Texas

107,000 customers without power across state

AUSTIN – Though Harvey continues to move away from Texas, the need from communities not hard hit by the storm continues to grow.

On Wednesday, Gov. Greg Abbott requested several counties be added to President Trump’s federal disaster declaration.

They include Travis, Tarrant and Dallas counties for the aid they are providing in response to the storm. Bexar County was added to the federal declaration last week.

Abbott also said a press conference that FEMA has provided more than 5 million meals to people impacted by the storm.

Work is also underway to get people displaced by the storm into transitional housing, Abbott said.

There are more than 32,000 people in shelters across Texas.

Abbott said Texas also has an additional 30,000 beds "available as needed" for those who fled or are still fleeing floodwaters, associated with the storm.

There are still about 107,000 power outages statewide, down from nearly 140,000 over the weekend.

Abbott refused to speculate on the final costs of the storm in terms of property damage. But he suggested that the scope of destruction far exceeded that of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 or 2012's Superstorm Sandy, meaning the financial impact will likely be far greater than both.
