Browne's Blog: Solar budget slashed, jobs in jeopardy

Installers may make cuts when rebates run out

By Steve Browne - KSAT Weather Authority Meteorologist

SAN ANTONIO - I had dinner with the folks at Solar San Antonio who are saying goodbye to "Solar Sweetie" Christine Chapa who is taking a new job in San Fran. Lanny Sinkin, son of Solar San Antonio founder Bill Sinkin, talked solar with me and had some disappointing news. CPS Energy has drastically cut their solar budget this year. The consequences will hurt local solar installers who will have to cut jobs when the rebates run out. Too bad. My advice if you are thinking solar is DO IT NOW! Call Solar San Antonio at (210) 22-SOLAR for free help. They will hook you up with three qualified installers who gladly survey your site and give you a free bid.

I installed solar at my home nearly two years ago and cut my electric bill by 85%. It's a great deal when CPS is paying 50% of the installation cost and the remaining cost is given a 30% tax credit. Effectively every dollar you invest is multiplied by 3. It's a very good deal. Go solar.

UPDATE: CPS Energy Marketing Director Lisa Lewis wants you to know the CPS solar rebate program is alive and well. However, they did lose a $2 million grant that was available last year. But the CPS solar budget remains nearly the same as last year. I still recommend do it now.
