Seguin PD helping Houston counterparts after Harvey devastates area

Donations taken to Harvey victims

SAN ANTONIO – A small police department showed a huge gesture of support this week in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

The Seguin Police Department came to the aid of the Houston Police Department as officers work around the clock to search and rescue people.

Seguin police arrived with a trailer carrying much-needed supplies. The thought and effort were much appreciated.

The officers may have never met before, but their common bond is a willingness to serve and protect.

“It’s a true token of family — brotherhood or sisterhood — no matter what. If someone is falling down or if someone needs help or assistance, that unity, that family bond is completely there,” said Sgt. Carlos Contreras, Seguin Police Department spokesman.

Seguin police had been monitoring the rain brought on by Harvey and knew they had to do something to help. They started taking in donations Wednesday and had a total of 70 boxes filled with socks, underwear and undershirts.

Contreras said the donations were made possible with the help of the community and its neighboring law enforcement agency — the Gonzalez Police Department.

“Our city may be a mid-size town, however, it has a big city heart. Whenever there’s a need, or if there’s something that can bring the community together, Seguin is really great about doing that. That’s why we reached out to them,” Contreras said.
