WATCH: UTSA defeats Middle Tennessee 75-72 on last-second 3 point buzzer-beater

Win was Roadrunners’ first Conference USA victory of season

SAN ANTONIO – Jacob Germany had 23 points and 11 rebounds, John Buggs III knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with one second left and UTSA beat Middle Tennessee 75-72 on Thursday night.

Japhet Medor added 19 points for the Roadrunners, as DJ Richards shot 3 for 11 (1 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line to finish with 11 points.

The Roadrunners led 36-33 and then went on a 24-10 run to go up 60-43 in the second half, taking a 17-point lead near the eight-minute mark. Middle Tennessee, however, then began to claw back, tying the game with just 13 seconds remaining.

Medor’s late-game attempt to drive by his defender stalled, and that’s when Buggs caught a pass at the top of the three-point arc and drilled the game-winner. The team celebrated following the basket.

Eli Lawrence led the way for the Blue Raiders with 20 points and six rebounds. Camryn Weston added 15 points for Middle Tennessee. Jestin Porter also had 12 points and two blocks.

Germany’s 12 points led the way in the first half for UTSA (7-8, 1-3 C-USA), who took a 34-28 at the break. Medor led UTSA with 11 points in the second half and Buggs scored 11 points total and was one of four Roadrunners in double-figures.

The Roadrunners protected the ball and had only eight turnovers, tying a season-low, which ended in 10 points for Middle Tennessee (9-6, 2-2 C-USA). The victory was the team’s first conference win of the season and head coach Steve Henson’s first over the Blue Raiders.

UTSA next plays Western Kentucky at the Convocation Center on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
