EDINBURG, Texas – The reality of fielding a college football team is getting closer for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros football team.

On Wednesday, the Vaqueros' first-ever football schedule was released. UTRGV is set to play seven home games during their inaugural 12-game season in 2025, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Tuesday.

Former Seguin High School and New Braunfels Canyon High School head coach Travis Bush was hired as the Vaqueros' first head football coach in program history. Tuesday was another step closer to his team playing football games that count.

“We’re excited to finally get the schedule released to the public,” Bush told KSAT 12 Sports. “Fans can finally see who’s coming to our place and where we’ll be traveling to this fall. It gets more real by the day.”

The Vaqueros are one of only 10 NCAA Division I FCS programs to host seven regular-season home games in 2024, a rarity among the 130 teams in the division.

Typically, FCS programs play 11 regular-season games, but the NCAA permits a 12th game when there are 13 weekends between Labor Day and the weekend before Thanksgiving, as will be the case in 2025.

The Vaqueros will kick off their first-ever game on Aug. 30 at home against Sul Ross State at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium. Following a trip to Prairie View A&M in week two, they will host North American on Sept. 13 and Texas Wesleyan on Sept. 20.

Southland Conference play begins for the Vaqueros on Sept. 27 at Southeastern, with their first home game against Houston Christian on Oct. 4. After a bye in week seven, the team will visit Lamar on Oct. 18 and host the University of the Incarnate Word on Oct. 25. The Cardinals were the No. 6 overall seed in the 2024 NCAA Division I Football Championship.

The Vaqueros will continue their season with a visit to Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 1, a home game against Nicholls on Nov. 8, a visit to McNeese on Nov. 15 and will conclude the regular season at home against East Texas A&M on Nov. 22.

“Excitement around the valley is still growing. This region is so ready for football,” Bush said. “Season tickets are sold out. All the suites are sold out. Everyone is just counting down the days until kickoff.

Fans will have to wait until late August to watch UTRGV finally kick-off.
