The Supreme Court appears ready to gut a key tool of the Voting Rights Act that's helped root out racial discrimination in voting for more than a half century.

The March on Washington of 1963 is remembered most for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

It all started with one week in 1926, when one organization chose the second week of February to promote the achievements by Black Americans and other people of African descent.

SAN ANTONIO – She was one of the original freedom riders. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Dilworth joined the Freedom Riders at age 17 in 1961 after watching the Mississippi civil rights activities on the television. In the earlier days of the Freedom Riders, Dilworth was arrested in Mississippi alongside Barbara Bowie’s brother. Decades later, she joined Dilworth every year where they lived in San Antonio, educating local children. Dilworth’s major role in the Civil Rights Movement wasn’t her only great service to the United States.

SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio has a rich history, filled with people, places and events that helped shape it. But, much of San Antonio’s Black history has remained untold for years. Throughout the history of the fight for Civil Rights in our country, Black churches played a part, serving as meeting spaces when there weren’t many other options. All three churches are still operating today, providing a safe space for Black San Antonians and the entire community.
