Two-day Juneteenth Festival kicks off at Comanche Park 2
The Juneteenth Festival is underway at Comanche Park #2 with good food and a celebration of Black history. The holiday was first created here in Texas in the 19th Century after President Abraham Lincoln declared formerly enslaved people free under the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. It wasn't until two years later that word reached those in Texas, when union soldiers arrived in Galveston with news that slavery was abolished.
