Suspect in deadly DWI case to face trial after rescinding 'no contest' plea

A deadly DWI case that was supposed to end in a plea deal and potentially only probation will now go to trial. The change of plans for Mariana Campos-Jimenez results from some mistaken advice her attorney gave her. He told the court he mistakenly told her that, instead of getting jail time for involuntary manslaughter, she could get probation. Campos-Jimenez was 20 years old when she was charged with causing the fatal accident in 2020. Officials said she was driving the wrong way on Loop 1604 before hitting and killing 44-year-old Gabriel Gallegos. Earlier this summer, Campos-Jimenez pleaded no contest. She could get anywhere from two to 20 years in prison. Because of that, the judge will allow the case to go to trial. A jury is expected to be picked before the end of the month.
