Book store only one for miles on South Side

Dead Tree Books filling void for avid readers

SAN ANTONIO – From romance to science fiction, there is a book for everyone at Dead Tree Books on the the city's South Side.

“People like to hold the books. The batteries never run out, they never go faulty, there is a smell. It smells like a bookstore,” Kenny Johnson, co-owner of Dead Tree Books said.

In April 2016, the Johnson family opened Dead Tree Books on the intersection of South Flores Street and East South Cross Boulevard after finding out there wasn’t a book store for miles.

"There was a need here and we wanted to fulfill it,” Lisa Johnson, co-owner of Dead Tree Books said.

The store has been well received by residents.

Local resident Anthony Edds lives near by and encourages his children to read books.

“The fact that it’s the only one around for miles as far as I know, that’s pretty cool that its right here,”  Edds said.
