SAN ANTONIO – Smack in the middle of downtown's concrete expanses, something green is sprouting up again: the Main Plaza Farmer's Market.
The market made its spring return Tuesday, and will be available every Tuesday from 10 a.m. until about 2 p.m. until December. It's the result of a partnership among the city of San Antonio, Main Plaza Conservancy and the San Antonio Food Bank that is promoting healthier living by providing easier access to fresh fruits and veggies.
"When it comes to farmer's markets, low-income families think it's just for the affluent, but it's for everyone," said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the Food Bank.
It's a chance to showcase local farmers and other vendors with natural or organic products.
Gloria Flores, of Elmendorf, is among the vendors. She peddles freshness by the dozen, selling eggs.
"I raise my hens like grandma would raise them way back," she said. "There's nothing added to their feed. It's natural."
Shopper Yolanda Muzquiz said she appreciates the "convenience."
Adding to the accessibility, the market also accepts SNAP benefits and Farmer's Market Nutrition Program vouchers.
The Food Bank participates in various farmer's markets around the city.
