Unique opportunities offered for students of smallest school district in Bexar County

Cosmetology, welding, criminal justice, auto and body classes offered

SAN ANTONIO – The smallest school district in Bexar County is growing it's student body and its curriculum, which means more opportunities for Somerset ISD students.

“There's a pathway for every student when you look at our k-12 curriculum, we offer cosmetology, welding, criminal justice, auto and body, and many others. There's a place for everybody that wants to attend Somerset ISD,” Superintendent Dr. Saul Hinojosa said.

Unique opportunities are plentiful for the 4,100 students enrolled in the district.

“Whatever somebody want to do here, you can pretty much find your pathway for your major and minor. Specifically for me, I've been able to take my animal science pathway and get involved in veterinary medicene and taking care of livestock,” Somerset High School senior David De La Fuente said.

Over the last few years, Somerset ISD has put $500,000 INTO Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Labs for its students. This year, the district is going to expand it's reading program.

“Somerset ISD has a unique partnership with UTSA that we call the Roadrunner Reader Program. We're looking forward to implementing it district wide. Last year, we started it with our primary campuses and this year, we're going to take that initiative and spread it district wide,” Hinojosa said.
