History

Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France on May 5, 1862. The smaller Mexican Army was able to defeat the enormous French Army at the Battle of Puebla.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Mexico celebrates their Independence Day on Sept. 16.

Traditional celebrations for Cinco de Mayo include parades, Mariachi musical performances and street festivals.

It is also thought to be the biggest day for margarita sales all year.

As of July 1, 2014, Hispanics accounted for 17 percent of the entire U.S. population.

The largest concentration of Mexican-origin residents is in Los Angeles, where the biggest U.S. Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place.
