University Hospital celebrates grand opening of children's health emergency department

Pediatric specialists from UT Health Science Center to staff department

SAN ANTONIO – University Hospital on Friday celebrated the grand opening of the hospital's children's health emergency department.

The emergency department will handle minor and major emergencies and will be staffed by pediatric specialists from the UT Health Science Center, hospital officials said.

It features 16 patient rooms, a procedure room, a resuscitation room and a behavioral health room.

Chantel Nasits recently took her daughter to the emergency department. She said the level of care that the doctors gave to her daughter put her at ease.

"It means everything as a mother, because even though you don't plan for emergencies to happen, when they do, just knowing that someone is here to take care of you and your children is just the most amazing experience," Nasits said.

A level 1 pediatric trauma center is moments away if a child needs treatment that the emergency department can't provide, hospital officials said.
