Fireworks sales brisk ahead of New Year's celebrations

Sales expected to increase as weekend approaches

SAN ANTONIO – As we get closer to New Year’s Eve, operators of fireworks stands scattered across Bexar County expect sales to soar as high as the skyrockets they’re selling.

“I think it’s going to be our best year,” said Robert Davis, who operates more than 100 Alamo Fireworks stands in the area.

He said the cost of most fireworks products has remained the same as last year.

“You could come in and spend a hundred to $200 and have a good show at home,” he said.

Along with fireworks, Davis said he and others there offer customers the same cautionary advice offered by the San Antonio Fire Department.

  • Select an area free of dry grasses and other vegetation
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby
  • Avoid using fireworks when winds are high
  • Have an adult present and never give fireworks to children.

Davis said conditions are perfect for using fireworks this year since we’ve had enough rain to keep the ground moist and the weather is expected to be mild.

A word of caution, however, if you plan to use fireworks to welcome in the New Year: State law prohibits the use of fireworks within city limits. Violation of the ordinance could result in a fine of up to $2,000.
