Burglar opens fire on couple, killing man, critically wounding woman

Shooting was reported at 2:40 a.m. in 800 block of Canton Street

SAN ANTONIO – A burglar trying to break into a home opened fire on a couple returning home from a bicycle ride early Monday, killing a man and critically injuring a woman.

The couple arrived at their home around 2:40 a.m. in the 800 block of Canton Street on the city's East Side, when they tried to stop the man from entering their home, said Officer Doug Greene, a San Antonio Police Department spokesman. The burglar fired several shots at the victims.

"They may have been at some other function prior to the shooting. Maybe a friend or family function," Greene said.

Both victims, who were 26 years old, were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center, Greene said. The man died there and the woman was listed in critical condition.

The woman told officers the burglar took off in a light-colored vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867). A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
