100 Club of San Antonio mobilizing to help fallen firefighter's family

Organization provides support to families of fallen first responders

SAN ANTONIO – When a hero’s life is lost, the 100 Club steps in to help in the aftermath of tragedy.

Scott Deem, a six-year veteran of the San Antonio Fire Department, was killed Thursday night while fighting a fire at a shopping center along Ingram Road.

“We were very distressed,” said Richard A. Miller, 100 Club of San Antonio president. “We had just spoken to the San Antonio firefighters about some injured firefighters we could serve and talked about family assistance. And to have this happen just the very next day, it was very distressing to us.”

The 100 Club will present a check to Deem’s family when the time is appropriate, Miller said.

“When there's a sudden, tragic loss, there are so many expenses, from travel to purchases, new suits and dresses for growing children,” Miller said. “And we don’t want them worried about money.”

The organization also provides money for college for the children of fallen first responders.

Deem leaves behind a wife, two children and a third child on the way.

“All three of those children will be entered into our survivors fund,” Miller said. “And when they are ready to go off to higher education, the 100 Club will be there.”

Miller said the organization received numerous calls Friday from community members asking how they can help.

“We have had calls all day long from people who both want to donate to the 100 Club, express their support,” he said. ”And many just want to spend some time on the phone expressing their gratitude for our first responders and what they do.”

“Their thoughts and prayers, those are what’s needed most right now,” Miller said.
