12 injured in string of crashes involving 10 vehicles on SW Side

Police say driver under influence of drugs or medication

SAN ANTONIO – Twelve people, including seven children, were hurt in a string of crashes involving at least 10 vehicles on the city’s Southwest Side, which police said may not have been an accident.

San Antonio police are still trying to sort out what exactly happened along a stretch in the 4000 block of Southwest Military Drive around 3 p.m. Tuesday. The series of crashes left behind a swath of destruction for at least half a mile.

A driver’s vehicle ended up in a mobile home in which the people inside, including a child, were not hurt. Police said he was under the influence of drugs or medication, and witnesses said he was driving about 100 miles per hour.

The driver is described as being in his early 20s.

The condition of the victims involved in the crashes has been updated to stable.

Police are still trying to get a better understanding of what happened, but they said the driver hit multiple cars as he drove on Southwest Military Drive. They said he plowed into moving and parked vehicles.
