19-year-old facing capital murder charge in infant son's death

Alexander Rana died March 24

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police arrested Arjunkumar Rana, 19, Thursday night on a capital murder charge for the March 24 death of his 2-month-old son, Alexander.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Salame said emergency personnel went to Rana's home in the 3200 block of NW Loop 410 on March 24 after getting a call regarding an unresponsive child.

Alexander was taken to Methodist Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A week later police were called back out to the home for a disturbance. Later that night, police said Rana confessed to killing his son because the baby woke up in the middle of the night and Rana wanted to sleep.

Early Thursday, the medical examiner's office ruled Alexander's death a homicide by asphyxiation. Police got an arrest warrant and picked up Rana Thursday afternoon.

While he was led away to the magistrate's office, Rana told reporters that his son had spent five days in the hospital prior to the 911 call.

Salame said the child's medical history will be taken into account during the investigation. The child's mother is not facing any charges at this time.
