5 hospitalized in wrong-way crash involving 3 cars

Two-year-old among the injured

SAN ANTONIO – Five people were sent to a local hospital following a three-car wrong-way crash in southwest Bexar County.

Police received a call for a wrong way driver on Interstate 35 near Cassin Road. The driver continued traveling south in the northbound lane just past Loop 410 when he hit a pickup truck, police said.

After the collision, the wrong-way driver veered right and crashed into a minivan. The wrong-way driver's truck then flipped on its side and the minivan caught fire, police said.

Police said the minivan was carrying passengers with special needs. Firefighters managed to get everyone out. Five people were taken to University Hospital, including a 2-year-old.

Police are investigating whether the wrong-way driver was under the influence of alcohol.
