Affidavit: Man charged in 6-day August robbery spree

Jose Avila, Jr. charged in 5 robberies

SAN ANTONIO – Jose Avila, Jr., 34, is facing yet another charge in connection with a convenience store robbery spree that spanned six days during the month of August.

San Antonio police believe he's the man-- often described as wearing a fedora-style hat-- who walked into convenience stores carrying a portfolio case with a gun inside and demanded cash from the clerks.

The robberies at five stores happened during a six-day period in mid-August. KSAT 12 News first reported news of Avila's arrest around that time.  Since then, police have tied him to several cases.

The most recent charge was filed on Monday and stems from a robbery at a store in the 500 block of Blanco Road on Aug. 12.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that the clerk told investigators the robber displayed a gun inside a portfolio case and demanded $20 bills from beneath the register drawer.

When the clerk explained that there weren't any, the robber asked to see for himself, the affidavit stated.

Police said they questioned Avila after his arrest and he admitted to committing this crime and others.

The affidavit stated that he also told detectives where to find the portfolio involved in the crimes as well as the gun, which turned out to be fake.
