SAN ANTONIO – The brain surgeon who wants to be president, Ben Carson got a rock star welcome at a far Westside bookstore Sunday night.
Supporters outside Books-a-Million off Loop 1604, screamed as he hurriedly walked past them without speaking.
Carson was about half an hour late to the book signing. Even so, at least 2,000 people waited patiently, some since 10:30 a.m. for the 8 p.m. event.
The candidate, who has been polling among the top five Republican presidential candidates, promptly sat down and began signing copies of his new book, "A More Perfect Union."
Asked how that would be possible, Carson said, "The U.S. Constitution, that's what it's all about."
He briefly paused for a two-minute Q&A with reporters.
Carson said family detention centers for mothers and children entering the U.S. illegally wouldn't be necessary if the borders are secured.
"Have to have a double wall, a double fence with an asphalt road for quick access and you have actually put border guards on the border and you have to prosecute first-time offenders. That'll stop it," Carson said.
As for extending the stay of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Carson said it had been a mistake pulling out of Iraq and he didn't want that to happen in Afghanistan.
By 10:30 p.m. Carson boarded his bus as supporters left with their signed copies of his latest book.
