Better Business Bureau warns of schemers targeting students, recent graduates with debt BBB gives tips to avoid being scammed No description found
SAN ANTONIO – The Better Business Bureau is warning people about schemers who are targeting people with student loan debt.
The agency said schemers call, email or send a letter to people with student loan debt and claim they can alleviate all student debt with an upfront fee.
Student loans can only be forgiven under specific circumstances by the federal government.
The BBB said schemers take advantage of the summer season because many students have graduated by then or are trying to pay for their fall classes.
The BBB has some tips for students to avoid getting scammed:
Never pay upfront fees to callers.
Never give a third party power of attorney.
Do research and ask questions.
Know what options are available for repaying student debt.
Students or graduates should not ignore payment notices. Anyone with payment issues should contact their lender to come up with a plan.
Keep student loan debt under control.
