Celebration held to congratulate World Series Little League softball champions

Hundreds turned out to meet, greet softball team

SAN ANTONIO – A big celebration was held in Helotes Saturday to congratulate the 2016 Little League World Series champions. Hundreds of people turned out to meet and greet the softball team.

“I think it’s really cool how we can do the parade, celebrating our win,” said Maddie McKay, a Little League pitcher.

“We didn’t know it was going to happen,” said Olivia Ball, Little League center fielder.

In all, 21 floats made their way down Old Bandera Road. The float carrying the champions was saved for the end.

The softball team is made up of 14 girls. All of them have been playing together since they were 7 or 8 years old.

“We have to do this together. We can make it,” Maddie said.

The All-Stars defeated North Carolina 5-1 in the 2016 World Series, which was held in Portland, Oregon, this month. Their parents beamed with pride and said the girls have worked very hard to win.

Hundreds came out to congratulate the girls during Saturday’s festivities.

“It makes me feel really, really good and appreciated,” Maddie said.

“It’s kind of surreal. It’s still kind of hard to soak in, but it’s amazing. It’s so awesome,” said Aly Guerrero, director of fundraising and treasurer for the Greater Helotes Little League.
