Plans aim to shape growth in city through 2040

SAN ANTONIOUpdated @ 1:20 p.m.:

City Council approved three plans for SA Tomorrow.

Trichair and District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg said he was pleased with the vote, adding that the passage of the plan a historic moment for the city.

"Today we took an important step toward creating the San Antonio that we deserve. One that is economically resilient, environmentally sustainable, community-centered and better connected," Nirenberg said. "We have been working for over two years to listen closely to thousands of neighbors who have their own vision for our city."

Nirenberg said that implementation of the plans must be followed through.

"Success will be measured by doing, not planning," he said.

Original Story:

The San Antonio City Council is expected to vote on the SA Tomorrow plan Thursday.

The three-part plan will provide city leaders with a blueprint of how the city will look in the coming decades.

SA Tomorrow consists of a comprehensive plan, which will serve as the city's policy and land-use guide as well as a multimodal transportation plan and a sustainability plan, which will serve as implementation components of the comprehensive plan.

The program will build off the city’s SA 2020 plans.

With another million people expected to move to San Antonio in the next 25 years city planner are hoping the new plans will provide a “innovative approach aimed at accommodating the city's projected growth by the year 2040.  This approach will provide the community with more choices for housing and transportation while preserving our resources and maintaining a high quality of life.”

City leaders have held numerous meetings over the past three years as they worked to draft the plan.

The multimodal transportation plan will “focus on moving people, not cars, by providing transportation mode choices. San Antonio's street system is largely complete, and the opportunity to add new roadways or widen existing ones is limited.  This means light rail, dedicated Bus Rapid Transit and HOV facilities must be considered in the future.  Working closely with VIA, Amtrak, future commuter rail and high speed rail providers will be critical.”

The sustainability plan “aims to balance the growth with our environmental, economic, and social resources.   A greenhouse gas inventory, climate vulnerability study, and climate trends analysis guided development of the plan.”
