New, improved B-Cycle bikes roll out just in time for holiday weekend

Bike sharing program sees huge growth in five years

SAN ANTONIO – B-Cycle, the city's bike sharing program, rolled out its new bike Friday.

Directors of the nonprofit unveiled the "B-Cycle 2.0."

JD Simpson, executive director of the B-Cycle program, said that the new bikes are an "improved" version of the older model.

"We still have the old style bike," Simpson said. "But this is a new style bike. It's a little bit easier to ride. It's a little bit sleeker. The basket has a clam shell on the front. So, it works a little bit differently."

There are 50 of these new B-Cycles and 450 of the original style.

Also showing growth: the number of stations.

The program started with 14 stations. There are now 58 stations stretching from the Witte Museum to Mission Espada.

"We've grown a lot in the last five years. And we were basically the fourth city in the nation to get bike share," said Simpson. "So it's very exciting to still be doing extremely well."

Another addition, instead of getting 30 minutes per transaction on a bike, you can now get an hour before you dock your bike.
