Community marches together to honor slain Detective Benjamin Marconi

Many in attendance suffered similar losses

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio community on Wednesday night came out in full force to honor slain Detective Benjamin Marconi. Hundreds marched from Alamo Plaza to police headquarters.

Every step was a symbol of gratitude. Every turn was a sign of respect. The San Antonio Police Department, neighboring law enforcement agencies and the community came together, embracing one another in the wake of tragedy.

“It hits home. It hurts, brings back a lot of old memories,” said Shavawn Brozovic, who lost her father more than two decades ago. “It’s been 28 years since my dad was shot and killed in the line of duty. He was not far from his precinct when he was killed. Also, (a) gunshot wound to the head.

Brozovic’s father was also part of the San Antonio Police Department family.

Brozovic said she was surrounded by law enforcement at a police get together the day of the shooting.

“The look on the family assistance officers’ faces as they were rushing out of the bowling alley to respond was just heartbreaking. All I could do is just sit there and pray," Brozovic said.

It’s a moment she’ll most likely never forget. Brozovic said she has a message for Marconi’s family.

“We're always here for you. We've been through it. Sometimes it helps to talk to people who have experienced the same things that you have," she said.

Many others in attendance are familiar with this type of loss. Others just wanted to show their support for their brothers and sisters in blue.

“I just wanted to come out a show my support. I lost a good friend of mine in 2013, Officer Bobby Deckard, so I know this is a great loss," Paula Arocha said.

“I think what hurts the most is that it takes this for people to rally together. I hope people see the severity and circumstances law enforcement officers go through every day," Kyle Lobo said.

The vigil ended about 9 p.m. Wednesday, but a memorial at police headquarters continues to grow as support pours in.

Marconi will be laid to rest Monday. Thousands are expected together that same night for another vigil in his honor.
