Community offers SAPD support in wake of Dallas shootings

Mayor Ivy Taylor offers condolences to families of shooting victims

SAN ANTONIO – Community members have been leaving cards with well wishes and food for officers at the San Antonio Police Department's north substation.

On Friday morning, some of the San Antonio community showed its heartfelt support for the San Antonio Police Department.

Assistant Chief Anthony Trevino said acts like these are what makes him proud to be a member of the San Antonio Police Department and a member of this community.

"This did happen in Dallas, but it touches us all," Trevino said. “I think the fact of how we rally together as a community is a true testament to how great the city of San Antonio is."

Trevino also reminded the community during a press conference on Friday that the city needs to work together by reporting information to law enforcement and that every life matters. He also said the department has been making some efforts to modify use of force, but, ultimately, they're trying to keep the community safe.

"We've been making an effort the last several years on how we are training our officers," Trevino said. "We're putting them through the rigors of de-escalation training and looking at use of force from a very microscopic level.”

Mayor Ivy Taylor also offered her sincerest condolences Friday to all those affected by the violence in Dallas.

"We all know that our city of San Antonio is a city with a deep heart," Taylor said. "And today, our heart aches for the victims and their families."

Trevino said anyone with an emergency should call 911. He said people calling about a non-emergency issue should call the department at 210-207-7273.

Trevino also said people can always send them tips anonymously.
