Community reacts to well-known man's murder

Many in Schertz are in disbelief over the shooting

SCHERTZ, Texas – Just 24 hours after Henry Gutierrez’s son found his father dead in his Schertz home; many in the small town 25 miles northeast of San Antonio are still trying to process the situation.

"I've known Henry for many, many years," said Grump Azzoz, a member of the City Council. “You start thinking why you know and you start thinking this is not true it’s a bad dream. But it’s reality."

Police say Gutierrez was killed sometime between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursday.

Schertz police say they were called to the 2200 block of FM 3009 just before 11 a.m. when they received reports of a shooting. “Someone entered his home as he was sitting in the living room and, believe opened fire on him and he had multiple gunshot wounds,” Detective Ernest Spradling said.

The victim’s son told police he went to his father’s home after he did not show up for work. On Saturday Azzoz said police have two people of interest in the murder, but have not released the names of those suspects.

Police are seeking the public’s help with the homicide investigation. They believe the killer may be driving Gutierrez’s stolen 2013 White Ford Expedition with Texas license plate BRP-3217.

Gutierrez was the owner of Bexar Waste, the city’s trash service provider. Police said he was well-known within the community. “He was known to bring tamales around to the police departments, fire departments, different businesses,” Spradling said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 1-877-403- TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and there is a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of whoever killed Gutierrez.

This is the third homicide in Schertz in 2015.
