SAN ANTONIO – Dramatic dashcam video of a chase recorded by San Antonio police officers was the centerpiece of testimony Thursday in the trial of Robert Rendon.
Rendon, 31, is charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer.
He led SAPD officers on a chase that began in Fredericksburg where Rendon is accused of shooting and wounding Fredericksburg police officer Bradley Durst after a traffic stop on April 18, 2014.
“I thought I was going to get shot,” San Antonio police officer German Huerta testified as the jury viewed his police vehicle dashcam video.
On the video shots can be heard as dozens of officers pursue Rendon at high speeds along several miles of San Antonio expressways. The chase began in Fredericksburg, approximately 60 miles north of San Antonio, traveling through two counties before SAPD officers joined it on Highway 281 North near the airport.
The chase ended after Rendon rolled his car on Interstate 10 at Ackerman Road. He was arrested, and police found an assault rifle, a handgun and a knife.
The jury saw video of Durst’s shooting.
“Help, I’ve been shot,” Durst can be heard moaning. He was shot in the neck and abdomen.Durst was airlifted to SAMMC where he underwent emergency surgery. He has since recovered and has returned to duty.
Rendon is also facing attempted capital murder charges in Gillespie County for the shooting of Durst. That trial is set for next month.
Testimony will resume on Friday in Judge Kevin O’Connell’s 227th District Court.
