Man wanted for child sex assault may be hiding in San Antonio

Jose Carmelo Lara, 57, accused of 2014 crime

SAN ANTONIO – It's been more than one year since the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force made its first plea to find a man wanted for having sex with a young girl. Jose Carmelo Lara has not been caught, but the effort to find him has not ended.

Lara, 57, has been wanted since 2014 on charges of sexual assault of a girl who was under the age of 14. He was first featured on KSAT-12 in June 2015.

"This little girl cried out for help and a report was filed with the San Antonio Police Department. Soon after, a warrant was issued for Lara's arrest. He went into hiding to avoid prosecution," said Deputy Chris Bozeman.

Now, the task force is renewing its plea for help finding Lara. He was born in Mexico but has ties to San Antonio.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force at 210-657-8500.
