Slaying suspect released, SAPD still trying to solve 1999 strangulation case

Suspect was accused of killing Shelle McGugin

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police made an arrest nearly a decade after Shelle McGugin was found dead in a Northeast San Antonio apartment, but that suspect was later released, setting back the investigation.

On June 2, 1999, McGugin, 35, was found in a unit at the Sunflower Apartments on the 2500 block of Northeast Loop 410. Police said she had been strangled with an electric cord.

The case went cold until 2008 when a man was arrested and charged in McGugin's death.

Court records show he was indicted, but the charges were dismissed because prosecutors didn't believe they could prove the man was responsible for McGugin's death.

SAPD's Cold Case Squad is still investigating the crime. If you have any information, call 210-207-7635.
