Mother mourning after son shot, killed over holiday weekend

Daniel Bocanegra, 23, found Sunday outside apartment complex

SAN ANTONIO – The mother of a man shot and killed Sunday morning doesn't know why someone would kill her son.

Daniel Bocanegra, 23, was found shot to death at a North Side apartment complex. Now his family is trying to figure out how to pay for funeral expenses.

Bocanegra's body was found early Sunday morning.

Officers were called to the Woodhill Apartments in the 4900 block of Woodstone Drive just before 1 a.m. When they arrived, they found Bocanegra had been shot and killed.

"I don't know how to go about this," Stella Barron, Bocanegra's mother, said. "A lot of people were jealous of him because he was trying to make it. He was trying to save money for a car."

The family is now preparing to bury the man who was a son, brother and father of two young girls. The shooting victim's mother and siblings described him as smart, loving and someone who stayed out of trouble. They said he had a good job and supported his family.

While police continue to investigate the case, officers first said they couldn't find any witnesses to the crime. Bocanegra's family said a detective told them a person of interest in the case is the last known friend he was with, but San Antonio Police Department hasn't confirmed that information.

Bocanegra's mother, who's still in shock, said she last saw him Friday night before he went out with friends.

"I'm upset right now because I have no money and I got to get a fundraiser or something so he can have a proper funeral," Barron said.
