Defenders revisit the Glen, residents see improvements

Uncertainty remains if city will annex the community

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – People living in the northeast Bexar County neighborhood known as the Glen still don't know if they'll be a part of the city of San Antonio.

While we wait for the latest on the annexation efforts from the city, which is expected in the next few months, residents in the Glen feel like they're in limbo.

A Defenders investigation into the neighborhood last fall had a lot of viewers talking. So, the KSAT-12 investigative team returned to see if progress is being made and where things go from here.

"It's quiet now," Glen Terrace resident Angela Green said. "You used to hear gunshots all the time. Not no more."

Green heard rumors about the high crime rate in the area before moving in. However, she says she's witnessed a cleanup since the Defenders last visited five months ago.

"Since last year, the crime stuff has been down you don't hardly see the police coming around no more," Green said.

Green's neighbor, Trama Neal, feels safe in and around her home.

"Glen Terrace, I don't know what it was before I moved here but now, it's getting better," Neal said.
The Glen sits in an unincorporated area between Windcrest and Converse. Residents get their services from the county. There's no code compliance department but rather a public works department, according to the area's commissioner, Tommy Calvert.

Calvert credits some of the improvements in the Glen to a series of community service projects.

"We've got crime problems. We have trash problems. We have problems with youth without things to do," Calvert said about the neighborhood.

The Precinct 4 commissioner believes the city of San Antonio can solve some of the area's biggest issues.

"I think that with the process of annexation there may be some improvements with code enforcement, trash collection and other tools that the city of San Antonio would have," Calvert said. He would like to see money from the pilot trash program next door in Camelot II fund a similar program in the Glen.

Calvert's staff also keeps tabs on vacant properties and they've installed hidden cameras in an effort to stop illegal dumping.
