Records: SAFD firefighter accused of driving while intoxicated

Abel Gomez, 43, arrested early Sunday morning

SAN ANTONIO – A veteran San Antonio firefighter was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to police sources and public records of the incident.

Abel Gomez, 43, is accused of being under the influence while driving along the access road of Loop 1604 at Babcock Road just after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to preliminary details provided by the University of Texas at San Antonio Police Department.

Gomez is a 21-year veteran of SAFD with the rank of lieutenant, according to a Texas Tribune website that tracks government salaries.

A public records search indicates Gomez is a licensed paramedic with the San Antonio Fire Department.

A department spokesperson declined to comment.

Gomez was booked at 8:45 a.m. Sunday and then released from the magistrate's office at 2:20 p.m. after appearing before a judge, according to the Bexar County District Clerk's Office.

Court records indicate Gomez was arrested in Bexar County in May 2009 on a misdemeanor family violence charge.

The charge was dismissed in early 2010, due to insufficient evidence, according to court records.

SAFD firefighters charged with DWI are typically handed suspensions of at least 60 days, under a stricter DWI policy put in place in December 2014.
