The devices can overheat and catch fire

SAN ANTONIO – If only “Back to the Future” films had warned us of the dangers of hoverboards. After videos surfaced showing the boards catching fire, Delta Air Lines announced Thursday that it is banning them from flights effective immediately.

In a news release the company said that in spite of their popularity this holiday season, “Poorly labeled, powerful lithium-ion batteries powering hoverboards are the issue. Delta reviewed hoverboard product specifications and found that manufacturers do not consistently provide detail about the size or power of their lithium-ion batteries.”

The company cited employee and passenger safety as the top reasons for the ban.

Delta also said that because some devices contain batteries above the government-mandated 160 watt hour limit they can overheat and catch fire.

According to San Antonio International Airport, the airline flies to half a different cities from San Antonio, with nearly 15 percent market share.
