Driver involved in weekend Wurzbach Parkway crash fighting for his life

Sergio Rivera, 28, and Brittannie Schreiter, 22, critically injured in wreck

SAN ANTONIO – The driver involved in the fatal rollover crash that happened on Wurzbach Parkway Sunday afternoon is fighting for his life.

Sergio Rivera, 28, was driving his 22-year-old girlfriend, Brittannie Schreiter, to work when the crash happened.

San Antonio police said Rivera attempted to make an illegal exit from the main lanes of Wurzbach Parkway between West Avenue and Highway 281, heading toward the access road across an active entrance ramp. It was then when the Saturn he was driving was struck by a BMW attempting to enter the parkway.

Although Schreiter was wearing a seat belt, she died from her injuries as a result of the crash.

"My son's in between life and death," said Sylvia Rivera, Sergio's mother. "This is like a parent's nightmare."

The couple involved in the accident met through a video game. Years after they met online, they met in person. Schreiter moved to San Antonio from Missouri.

"Appreciate what you have. Friends, family, your loved ones, your partners, because you don't know if they're going to be here tomorrow or not," Sylvia Rivera said.

Reverend Bee Dee Doublet said she was one of the first people to arrive at the crash scene. She spoke with Schreiter's mother about what she witnessed.

"I shared with her that I saw her daughter, and I was praying with her," Doublet said. "She screamed, yelled, cried over the phone."

Sergio was thrown from the car, even though he was wearing a seat belt. He's still in critical condition and is undergoing surgeries for multiple injuries. While his mother is praying for his recovery, she's doing what she can to bid Schreiter farewell.

"She had such a pure heart. They were so close. They had so many plans together," Sylvia Rivera said.

Schreiter's family has multiple online fundraising accounts to help them return her body to Missouri. Rev. Doublet has been asked to perform the memorial service and will travel to Missouri once plans are set.
