SAN ANTONIO – Parishioners at Corner Gate Christian Church hope to combat the violence with the power of prayer and the community’s support.
"We have to come together to press down the violence. If one (person) is saved then we know that we have done our job but it's going to take us as a whole to put our foot down and go out and reach those who are lost," pastor Oscar Dean Sr. said.
Church members say violence erupts almost daily in the community.
"My kids hear gunshots and they've gotten used to it. They've got normal. They don't run inside, they just like ‘Oh dad, someone’s shooting,’ and that’s not a good feeling to have from your kids," said Courtland Christian.
There have been eight deadly shootings in 2016. Church goers believe it all goes back to the parents.
"The parents have to reach back and grab their children," Herion Chase said.
Several members of the congregation said they use to be part of the problem. They say they've changed and found God. They are asking others to do the same.
"This is a plea to those who are out there controlling these streets. We ask you brother please come out to the church. Please promote better for your children, the children to come," Chase said.
