East Side residents react to string of violence

4 people shot since Thursday, police say 19 of 21 shootings have been solved

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police say they battle crime on the city's East Side every day yet violence continues to happen.

Three men have been injured in shootings since Thursday and one man riding a bike Friday was shot and killed during a drive-by.

"Usually there's gunshots at night." East Side resident Alexandra Martinez said.

Families, like Martinez and her mom, couldn't help but talk about all the crime that's been happening while enjoying the evening at Pittman-Sullivan Park.

"I think that there should be more presence where it's known that there's gang activity," Martinez said.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the department has solved 19 out of the last 21 shootings that have occurred. He said without the cooperation of witnesses and victims in investigations, the responsible parties won't be taken off the streets.

"We have made a lot of arrests in the area for crimes of violence. Unfortunately, there are some still out here that are not getting the message," McManus said.

"We don't go nowhere. We stay inside," East Side resident Jessica Troxell said. The mother fears for the safety of her own and other children living in the area.

"I don't think there's no making it better. It's about the people. I mean, if they put them in jail they're going to get out and do the same thing if they want to," Troxell said.

However, McManus said he and his team of officers will continue to work hard.

"We're not letting up. We're not going to give up," McManus said. "We directed some additional resources to this area yesterday after the Burnet shooting and we're going to press pretty hard."

When asked if two of the three shootings since Thursday on the East Side may possibly be connected due to a similar description of the suspect vehicle seen leaving, McManus said it was too early to tell.
