Family loses two brothers in one day

Brothers killed in fiery Sunday morning crash

SAN ANTONIO – It's been a tough week for a San Antonio woman who lost two brothers on the same day.

MariaLuisa Martinez said she had been worried about her two younger brothers, Luis, 22, and Erick, 18, after not hearing from them all day Sunday.

However, on Monday, she said she found out why.

"A police officer came," said Martinez. "He came and he let us know that they were no longer here with us."

Luis Martinez and Erick Martinez were killed in an accident early Sunday morning on Villamain Road, near Mission San Juan after the car they were in crashed and burst into flames.

Police said the driver was coming around a corner on Villamain Road when he lost control, took out a guardrail and slammed into a tree.

"It's just something so unbelievable," said Martinez. "They were with us and I think it was (last) Thursday when we were all here at my dad's house."

On Thursday, the family gathered at Martinez's dad's house on Sussex Street again. This time, trying to raise money to pay for the brothers' funeral service.

Martinez said both brothers had big dreams. Erick was about to graduate from high school.

Luis was in the process of joining the Army and in addition to wanting to serve his country, he also served his community.

"There was a time when he was helping the homeless," said Martinez. "Last week, he was helping them out and the following week as well. He was giving them clothes, giving them food and stuff."

The family is planning to hold a plate sale starting at 11 a.m. on July 18 at the Far West Event Center at 2502 Pleasanton Road to help pay funeral expenses.
