7 displaced by suspicious fire north of downtown

Arson investigators looking into cause

SAN ANTONIO – Seven people, including two young children, have been displaced as a result of a fire that appears to have started in a yard and then spread to their home just north of downtown.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call shortly after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday and found fire in the yard, on a fence and in the attic space of a duplex in the 700 block of Marshall Street.

Melissa Joyce, who lives in the duplex, said she noticed what looked like police car lights outside her window. When she took a closer look, she realized it was fire on a wooden fence between her home and the one next door.

She quickly woke up her boyfriend and roommate. They along, with a toddler, escaped the fire. Another couple who lives in the other half of the duplex also safely evacuated with their baby.

Firefighters put out the fire. Still, it caused about $10,000 worth of damage to the duplex.

They said it appears someone started the fire in the yard, either purposely or accidentally. Arson investigators were called to determine the cause.
