Burglar alarm alerts police to fire inside 2 North side businesses

Carpeting, flooring businesses on W. Nakoma affected

SAN ANTONIO – A ringing burglar alarm did its job and more when it called attention to a fire inside two North Side businesses Tuesday morning.

According to San Antonio fire investigators, something set off a motion detector around 7 a.m. causing a burglar alarm to ring inside the building which houses Sun Carpet & Interiors and Advanced Wood Floors. The building is located in the 200 block of W. Nakoma Street.

An officer and employee responded to the alarm and then noticed smoke inside the building, investigators said.

Soon, firefighters had joined them at the scene and began a quick attack on the fire.

"When they got on scene, they found quite a bit of fire in the back corner of the building,” said Joe Arrington, a public information officer for the San Antonio Fire Department. "They got the initial fire knocked down pretty early but it did get deep-seated into some materials inside.”

Investigators estimated that as much as 70 percent of the materials, which included carpeting and wood flooring, was damaged by the fire.

At one point, there were more than two dozen units on the scene.

Arrington said the department had to call a second alarm because of the amount and nature of materials inside the building.

No employees were working at the time. There also were no injuries reported in the fire.

Arson investigators were called to the scene to figure out how the fire started.
