Fourth deer found with chronic wasting disease

New regulations coming Aug. 24 for deer raisers

MEDINA COUNTY, Texas – A fourth case of chronic wasting disease has been found in deer in Medina County.

All four of the recent cases came from the same ranch, which has led to an increase in testing of both captive and harvested deer.

New rules and regulations will go into effect Aug, 24 that will create additional requirements that must be met before breeders can sell or transport deer.

Most breeders have already been banned from shipping deer since July, and Texas is limiting the release of captive-raised deer to properties enclosed by high fencing in an attempt to protect against the spread of the disease.

Chronic wasting disease has harmful effects on the brain and nervous systems of animals, but it is not considered a threat to human health.
