Funeral for slain SAPD Officer Miguel Moreno set for Friday morning

9-year veteran shot, killed on duty Thursday

SAN ANTONIO – The funeral for slain San Antonio police Officer Miguel Moreno has been set for 10 a.m. Friday at Community Bible Church.

Moreno, a nine-year veteran with the San Antonio Police Department, was shot and killed Thursday by a suspect identified as Andrew Bice following a confrontation near San Antonio College north of downtown.

Moreno and his partner Julio Cavazos -- who is also a nine-year veteran -- were responding to a suspicious-person call when they approached two suspects in the 200 block of West Evergreen Street.

Police said Bice opened fired on the two officers as they were exiting their patrol vehicle as they were attempting to question him and the second suspect, identified as 30-year-old William Lawson.

Despite being shot in the chin, Cavazos, 36, was able to drag Moreno to the front of the vehicle away from the line of fire and shoot Bice in the buttocks.

The medical examiner ruled Bice’s death a suicide.

On Friday, it was also learned that Moreno, 32, died at 11:11 a.m. of injuries sustained in the shootout.

Cavazos’ condition was upgraded to good condition Monday after undergoing successful surgery shortly after the shooting.

Moreno was a 2002 Lanier High School graduate and later attended the University of Texas, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.

Moreno, along with Cavazos, served with SAPD since 2008 and assigned to the Central Substation working Central Patrol B Shift.

Officer Moreno is the 55th SAPD police officer to die in the line duty. He is survived by his mother, father, three sisters, and brother.

The Friday services and subsequent police honors will be open to the public.

A public viewing will be held from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at Porter Loring Downtown.
